Comprehensive GST Calculator Guide & Formulas
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based, comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It subsumed various erstwhile indirect taxes like Central Excise, VAT, Service Tax, and Octroi.
1. How is GST Calculated?
Depending on whether the stated price includes or excludes tax, calculations follow two primary mathematical formulas:
A. GST Exclusive Formula (Adding GST to Base Price)
Total Gross Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount + Cess (if applicable)
Example: If an IT software license base price is ₹10,000 and GST rate is 18%:
• GST Amount = (10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800.
• Total Amount = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800.
B. GST Inclusive Formula (Removing / Reverse GST from MRP)
GST Amount = Total Gross Amount - Base Pre-Tax Amount
Example: If a product retails at an MRP of ₹1,180 with 18% GST:
• Base Price = 1,180 × (100 ÷ 118) = ₹1,000.
• GST Amount Included = ₹1,180 - ₹1,000 = ₹180.
2. Understanding Tax Splits: CGST, SGST, UTGST, and IGST
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on an intra-state transaction (50% of the total GST rate).
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on an intra-state transaction (50% of the total GST rate).
- UTGST (Union Territory GST): Levied instead of SGST in Union Territories without legislatures (e.g. Andaman & Nicobar, Chandigarh, Ladakh).
- IGST (Integrated GST): Levied on all inter-state transactions and imports, collected by the Central Government and apportioned to the consuming state.
